A short 30 miles west of Santa Barbara lies Gaviota State Park Beach (which takes its name from the Spanish word for seagull). Of particular interest are these rock formations which are part of the Monterey Shale Formation. Looking like pages from a book these rocks are oil rich and embedded with a wide range of fossils including remains of halibut type fish.

High Mountain Cattle Ranch
Nestled in the Wet Mountain valley and guarded by the Sangre de Cristo mountain range, the Beckwith Ranch, aka the Waverly House, is a historic cattle ranch established in the late 19th century near the small town of Westcliffe, Colorado. At its peak, brothers Edwin and Elton (who later went on to become a Colorado senator), ran one of the largest cattle operations in Colorado with upwards of 3,000 head of cattle.
